MyGarage Too!

 cars and kids
This is a community based pilot program being developed by Dr. Doug Smith.
The teenagers he is reaching out to with this program have different problems than the ones at Safe Harbor Boys Home
I am looking for car enthusiasts interested in volunteering their time to share their knowledge with youth.

I am setting up garages complete with tools and equipment in target neighborhoods for the purpose of keeping  kids off the street and into a controlled environment with adult supervision. This will not generate income or assets for any organization or person. It is intended to be strictly a labor of love. I will contribute tools and cars and will arrange for the use of garages but not their ownership. To many organizations get caught up in taking care of the assets and lose their vision of helping the people, the organization is intended to help; thus, the reason for this decision.

I am contacting a variety of car clubs seeking individuals willing to spend an hour or two on a regular basis, at a time of their choosing. I believe there are enough car enthusiasts interested in kids to man these garages.

Having volunteered for the last 25 years working with kids, I know how addictive it can be and you always get more out of it than you put into it.

Reasoning:

Our city is seeing large numbers of youth involved in truancy, and that ultimately leads to dropping out of school, and unfortunately violence and violent activities. As most of us understand, this is because we have raised a generation of young people without boundaries, direction or purpose.  They believe that respect is owed and not earned.

The only way to change this is to create an environment where we can demonstrate the principles we live by and make decisions upon. The overwhelming majority of these youth lack a father who is involved in their life. Although we cannot take the place of a father we can make a difference. Won't you consider helping just one?
